The valve has a sealed pilot. Pressure at ② overcomers the spring-bias poppet and allows free flow ② to ①; Flow in the opposite direction from ① to ② is blocked by the poppet.
The cartridge has a 3:1 pilot ratio, meaning that is required at pilot ③ to open the valve.
